The east-based Libyan House of Representatives accused, through its Speaker and through the spokesman of Khalifa Haftar-led militias, Turkey of supporting terrorism in Libya, while Turkey responded through its envoy to Libya with complete denial to those "baseless accusations."
HoR accusation of Turkey
The Speaker of the Tobruk-based House of Representatives (HoR), Aqilah Saleh, has accused Turkey of supporting terrorism in that country.
Saleh told Sputnik he believed that Turkey was supporting terrorism in the country, saying terrorist organizations are behind explosions in Benghazi, adding that the explosions were by the support of foreign countries, naming Turkey as one.
HoR’s Speaker was trying to accuse Turkey of being behind the two bomb cars that exploded in January near Bayat Al-Radwan mosque in Benghazi following prayer time when about 34 people were killed.
According to the HoR Speaker’s argument, the Greek coastguard seizure of a vessel carrying explosive materials from Turkey to the Libyan city of Misrata in January serves a proof of his claim.
In early January, the Greek coastguard detected the Tanzanian-flagged vessel Andromeda, which was carrying explosive materials from Turkey to Libya. The ship was stopped for a check and was then transported to the port of Heraklion on the Greek island of Crete. During a search of the ship, 29 containers with explosive materials, detonators, and other equipment were found, while the ship eight-person crew was arrested.
The ship’s cargo record indicates that the cargo was loaded at the Turkish ports of Mersin and Iskenderun before heading to Djibouti and Oman. UN Envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame pledged earlier on Sunday to reveal details of the seized ship.
The spokesman of the self-styled army of Khalifa Haftar’s militias, Ahmad Al-Mismari, said Turkey is the sponsor of terrorism in the country even before “the start of the military war against terrorism more than three years ago.”
He added at a news conference in Benghazi “The House of Representatives has not yet charged a commission of inquiry on the ship carrying explosives coming from Turkey. This ship was heading to the Muslim Brotherhood and al-Qaida, not to Misrata,” Mismari added.
“We will punish Turkey and all its companies. Its contracts in Libya are invalid now; there is an intelligence network between Turkey and Sudan following Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visits to Sudan and Tunisia.” He claimed.
Turkey denies “fabricated accusations” of HoR
The Turkish envoy to Libya Emrullah İşler has denied in an exclusive statement on the phone to Alnabaa TV Channel that his country was meddling in Libyan affairs.
İşler told Alnabaa on Sunday that UAE and Egypt are meddling in Libyan internal affairs militarily and shelling Libyan cities as well as providing certain parties with heavy and medium weapons.
“Turkey stands close and helpful to all parties in Libya without any exception,” İşler added.
Emrullah İşler added that the UAE and Egypt are pressuring eastern Libya officials to oppose Turkey, pointing out that such pressures can be eradicated once Turkey meets eastern officials in Libya.
